Making Indigenous Heritage verification nationally consistent in Australia

We officially began in Brisbane in 2015 but have been conducting research, community engagement, and delving into the vast family networks of Indigenous Australia since 2014.

It all started while reading yet another news article about fraud and weaknesses within designated Indigenous Australian services by people found to be non-Indigenous Australians.

The founder who comes from a background in national security and whose focus was identity resolution, was left confused by it all, knowing well that we have a range of national capabilities, and solutions that could help to fix the matter.

Afterall, it’s not victimless. Non-Indigenous Australians exploiting this framework for the purpose of gaining access to dedicated Indigenous Australian services costs all Australian tax payers a considerable amount each year, and impacts the communities for which it was intended…

Why are we doing it?

Honestly, why aren’t we doing it?

Across the country, over 3,500 Indigenous corporations and 243 native title groups support almost one million people (some reports suggest more). Yet the old system is often slow, confusing, and sometimes very unclear. As a result, many people have to wait too long or miss out on chances and services that matter.

During our journey we’ve heard stories ranging from significant costs associated with travel to home tribal regions to allow their families to have their kinship and heritage confirmed, not receiving heritage confirmation because of community family feuds, to the one we all know a little better, the ‘Stolen Generation’.

Yes! It’s complex, it’s diverse in nature, but as a nation, we can do better…
